All divine souls have threefold activities: some as souls, some as having received a divine intellect, and some as depending on gods. And they exercise providence over wholes as gods, they know all things according to their intellectual life, and they move bodies according to their self-moved existence. For because they participate in the things set above them in the manner of soul, and are not souls without qualification but divine souls, having taken on within the breadth of soul the rank that corresponds to the gods, they act not only in the manner of soul but also divinely, having obtained the summit of their own essence as god-filled; and because they have an intellectual hypostasis, by which they are also spread out beneath the intellectual essences, they act, therefore, not only divinely but also intellectually, having established the one activity according to the one within them and the other according to intellect. And a third activity belongs to them, the one according to their own existence, which moves the things that are by nature moved by another and gives life to the things that have their life brought in from outside. For this is the proper work of every soul, while the rest — thinking and exercising providence — belong to it by participation.

Source of LdC 3 (Bardenhewer: '§ 3 geht zurück auf § 201 des Lehrbuches'). ⚠ Bardenhewer's own caution applies to this very page: 'Bei Creuzer p. 300, und nach ihm bei Engelhardt S. 257, sind hier die Sätze unrichtig abgetheilt' — he judges Creuzer's SENTENCE DIVISION here to be wrong. Since the LdC 3 crux turns on the threefold division of activities, the paragraphing must be presented as Creuzer's editorial act, not as the text's own. Note (5) again shows Creuzer adopting TAYLOR's reading (ψυχικῶς) against both the edition and codex A. Phase 3 translation notes — CRUX, and the paragraphing is Creuzer's. Bardenhewer states that on this very page 'sind hier die Sätze unrichtig abgetheilt': Creuzer's division of the sentences here is, in his judgement, wrong, and LdC 3 turns on how the threefold division of activities is cut. The English follows Creuzer's text and Creuzer's division exactly, and claims nothing for it — the division is his editorial act, and the LdC 3 crux page must present it as such rather than as the text's own. Two further editorial acts stand on the same page: Creuzer's note (4) records that he EJECTED the clause κινοῦσι δὲ τὰ πάντα κατὰ τὴν νοερὰν ζωήν, absent from codex A, so a clause has been removed from what is translated here; and his note (5) records that he printed ψυχικῶς, Taylor's reading, against both the printed edition and codex A, which read φυσικῶς. ψυχικῶς is rendered 'in the manner of soul' to keep 'soul' visible for the ψυχή family.
